Brassai

Basic information about Brassai:

  • His name was Gyula Halasz and his age at death was 85
  • He was born on September 9th 1899 at Budapest, Hungary and died July 8th 1984 in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France.
  • Brassai moved to Paris in 1924, where he spent the rest of his life.

 

Education:

  • Brassai attended the Hungarian academy of Fine Arts.
  • He attended that school intending to learn about painting a sculpting.
  • His job as a journalist and love for the city of Paris led him to take up photography.

 

  • Brassai is well-known for his photography of Paris night life. He most likely used cameras that contained film because back then their cameras weren’t as advanced as they are now. Brassai was involved in film making, such as Tant qu’il y aura des betes ( As long as there will be animals) , which won the “Most Original Film” award the same year at the Cannes Film Festival. Brassai has also written 17 books, one being Historie de Marie. He was also into sculpting and journalism.

  • Brassai grew up speaking Hungarian.
  • After 1961 he stopped photographing and started concentrating on sculpting with stone and bronze.
  • His name is actually Gyula Halasz. He gave himself the name Brassai which means “from Brasso”
